A Lotus Flower when closed symbolizes potential, when open the release or actualization of potential. The fully opened Lotus releases seeds into the water. These seeds settle in the darkness and mud at the bottom of the pond. Here in the fertile darkness, the lotus’s journey begins. Slowly the plant rises out of the mud and through the water, finally breaching the surface of the water and forming a bloom. This flower symbolizes purity (rising out of the mud), knowledge (the stem and support of the flower which connects to it’s roots) and enlightenment (an open bloom in the light of the sun). While the bloom is closed, it’s knowledge and potential are hidden. Once the bloom opens, the knowledge is shared, new seeds are planted and the journey begins anew.
The Lotus and Geometry
In considering the idea that all things are interconnected and interwoven, I began to draw cross patterns and interconnecting circles. In these, it seems to me that the lotus shape naturally
occurs.
This is where my desire to create a lotus mandala out
of spiraling geometric shapes arises from. Building
the Seed Pods is an excellent opportunity for me to be
able to play with this idea in a tangible form. I also
envision an experience, both in the Seed Pods and in
the fully opened Geo Lotus, which is deeply
synergistic, interactive and oriented towards
participation and community.
